Default SE-258 Cams in a 96 CI FLHX

OK so I am getting ready to make some changes and I was told by the local builder that I should go with the SE-258 cams in my 96 CI. I might go to the 103; however, I have decided to do the cams and a D&D 2 into 1 Fat Cat system first. My question would be, has anyone run this cam with a 96 and if so how did/do you like it. It looks like most of the people on this forum went with the 255?

I went with the SE259e cams in my 103" build and it pulls awesome! When you look at the cams themselves, these cams like high compression, which I went with 10.5:1 forged pistons. If you plan on doing just cams first, this option may not work for you. They have a higher lift and may not run well with stock compression. Just my opinion.

Not without doing a whole bunch of head work. Too much lift, too much duration just to begin with. You'll be sitting at the stop light wondering where everyone else went.

Gotta agree with boogaloo. That 258 would be a turd in a stock 96. 259 wouldn't be much better in a stocker. Both cams really need compression to work well. There are a lot of choices out there from SE, Andrews, Wood, HQ, Tman, etc. that would work well in a stock 96 and would also be good for a 103-107 with 10:1 or so.

same here. went with 259e cams but i also did a 103 build and it pulls like a freight train. comes at about 2300 rpm and pulls to about 4200 rpm thats with se heads and 10.5.1 compression ratio.

Ditto what everyone else is saying. IMO, the 258's would be a pathetic choice in a stock TC96 unless you're going to increase compression considerably and upgrade the heads at the same time. With SE258's in a stock TC96, punch it in 5th at 60mph to pass a truck and it will likely just sit there until you downshift a couple of times.

The "right cam" is the one that gives you the power where you want it, so you'll need to decide where your range is and research it. If low-end and midrange is your biggest priority, the SE255's are excellent in a stock TC96 and that's the direct I went. They do not make big peak-HP numbers but are great up to about 4500rpms. Mike Stedman at Latus HD, who are known for their performance tuning, said no cam can beat SE255's up to 3500rpms, and you don't need a compression increase or headwork to get there.

Another possibility is the new Andrews TW48H, which has specs very close to the SE255's, but I haven't seen any charts or feedback on it yet. If you plan on increasing compression there are many more possibilities to choose from, as StreetglideRick has done with his bike, but IMO cams that match a stock TC96 well are few and far between, especially if you want to retain or increase your low-end TQ.

Thanks for the reply's, I did some more research and talked with an engineer from our local cam manufacture looks like my best choice after all the research is the SE-204 with the 96. The 170 duration is way to much without the head work and not to mention the needle bearing in the crank once you get things built that high.... Looks like this could be a long process.

I know a couple of guys who are very happy with the 204 cams. It's a good all around cam with a great sounding idle. Nice choice. (I think you meant to say 258 duration, not 170.)

The 258 cams, with their high lift, long duration and long overlap are designed to be run in high compression, high revving motors. The long duration and overlap are torque killers at lower rpm's.

Hi All,

I'm french and sorry for my bad english. :-)
I have mounted by Harley Davidson dealer a Screaming Eagles Stage IV on my RoadKing 2008 96CI, after 12430 miles I need to change the clutch and few miles after the engine does a terrible metallic noise, HD dealer suspect a cam bearing failure (~5000Euros), today I think that the kit is not a good way to have more power, I suggest to everyone to think about this upgrade.
