Default Cig Lighter Keeps Blowing Fuse

My lighter blows the fuse every 2nd or 3rd time I use it. When it goes it also takes out the gauges and tail light, not cool. Other than quiting smoking what do you think could be the issue? It's weird cuz it doen't do it every time.

Look for crap in the socket to see if something's causing it to short out.
It could also be the element witch would be reasonable to replace.
See if you can find a match at AutoZone.

Take off your outer fairing and see if somehting is shorting out the terminals on the end of the cig lighter.

Yea, that should be an easy find. And most likely it is the actual lighter I would bet. The way to check would be to ohm from the wire terminal on the rear to the housing on the lighter. (I would remove it or at least unplug it electrically.) Then ohm between both wire terminals on the rear of it.
IF it ohms with resistance, but not a dead short. Then check the power wire in the bike, (AGAIN without power on) to ground and see if it's shorted.

Might be easier to yank one from the car and test with the substitute lighter. But the theory is the same. It has that coil inside. Any lil short in that coil will change the resistance, and cause it to draw more amps.

If you don't have a spare, buy one. Nothing to lose, you'll have a spare for the saddlebag.
