Exclamation Fuel Door Lock Problem

Somehow my fuel door lock cylinder is turned to the open position (90 degrees counter clockwise) and it is staying there. It's as if you put in your key to open the fuel door, turned it 90 degrees counterclockwise and took the key out - which you can't do!

Since the outside ring cutout tab is straight up and the inside ride cutout tab is 90 degrees left I can't put the key in to correct the situation and my fuel door is permanently open. I have no idea how it got this way.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Not to be a smartass, but I'd take the opportunity to replace it with the pushbutton from HD. If you don't want to do that, unscrew the locknut on the bottom and take the whole thing out to work on it.

Disassemble and replace with a smooth pushbutton! Other than that, maybe disassemble, clean it all up and lube it good.

Sounds like it came loose, look at the underneath of it, there is a lock type nut for it. A good way to see how it should be is look at the instructions of one of those push button ones online it will have how to set it up. Hope this helps.

Hey, I don't consider any suggestions to achieve a better solution to be a 'smartass'. I'll consider it. For now, at least I can get fuel in and am not stranded.

Do as Dawg said....I love my push-button. There is a small button and a large button available from HD. Get the large button as it is easy to open with gloves on.

What I'm getting form these comments is you think that the entire cylinder on the inside turned independent of the outside ring? Good suggestion. I'll check it when I get home from work.

What Dawg said. I didn't need a stinkin' lock on my fuel door so I replaced it with the mushroom button. Works great, looks cleaner, and I don't have to look for a (useless) key when I get gas.

Replace it with a push-button, I'm not worring about someone stealing 6 gallons of gas from my bike.
