Just got a sales paper from Harbor freight and that have their trailer on sale for $399.00

 

As others have mentioned that is alot of stuff on your bike and still riding two up. Myself, I throw all of the bulky stuff in my Aluma trailer then un-hook it and lock it up when we get there.

It's not just the trailor, then you have to buy a hitch that can cost as much as some trailors. There is a company that makes a small bag with tent, sleeping bags and a couple of camp chairs all in it. Check this out.

I don't like all of that weight above the seat line.
A trailer is the way to go. (You will still need to pack sparingly.)
My riding buddy built a small (36"x30") one for less than $100 from salvage parts.
The hitch & wiring cost more than the trailer!!

 

On a silly note, there's always this kind of option:

 

I "camped" for 23 years in the Army. no more on the ground for me.A change of clothes, cell phone and Visa card to book my next hotel is the way I go.

 

I use to strap the sleeping bags, tent and pads on the outside of the saddlebag rails, just be sure nothing rubs and use a towel to protect the saddle bags. Looks like Dumbo going down the hwy. Too old for OL to camp anymore. I would rather have the weight low on the bike than have a trailor pushing me, yes I've had one. Also seen accidents w trailors, ok for flat landers but not in west IMO.

 

I narrowed a HF trailer and put a car top carrier on it. You'd be surprised how much stuff it will hold. I take my youngest camping with me all the time. I have a tent, 2 air mattresses, 1 12 volt pump to inflate and deflate them, pillows, stove, tent heater, sleeping bags, 2 folding chairs, a bow saw and hatchet for getting fire wood and alot more I probably forgot.

I hear you. Years ago I did combination motorcycle and mountain backpacking trips. No problem solo MC camping. But with my wife now and my 09 RK I'm not sure. I'm not interested in a trailer.
I have a down bag with a coupler kit that goes down small. Then a small tent and sleeping pads. We'd forget cooking stuff I think. I'm looking into a T-bag.
