Has anyone ever done a DIY method for allowing a spoked wheel to be tubeless?

This method looked pretty good

There is also a company that will do it for $59 per wheel, but it'd cost a million bucks to ship the wheels

Why ?

 

Tubeless are safer if you get a puncture, they will deflate slower. And, I always manage to pinch and tear the tube when I'm changing the tires (and not realize it until I have the tire mounted).
