By the book...40 rear, 36 front. Got 18735mi out of stock rear tire so I think I will stick with what works!

I have Avons, so the Owner's Manual doesn't apply. I go by the pressures listed on Avon's site - 40/40 light & 42/42 loaded down.

What is stated in the manual is correct only for the brand and size of tires that came installed from the factory. Change brands or sizes and you need to follow the tire manufacturer's recommended specs.

Actually it does - if you didn't change sizes. Brand is irrelevant when it comes to the load capacity of a certain size at a certain pressure. That is merely a function of physics.

Not true. Check these links out. Depends on construction and use too.

36 in front 40 in the rear. I tried the MAX pressure... Holy crap what a rough ride that was. I'll stick with the book and the recommended pressure.

I was surprised to see 7 people running the max listed on the tire. The tire maker does not know what bike it is on that is just the max for the tire, if they had a minimum I guess some would do that.
The manual is for stock tire and your bike.
I hope people don't put max pressure in car tires.

I used to argue with a riding buddy about this all the time. Running 'max' pressure, as indicated on the tire, is WRONG.

I run my at about 2 PSI under the max, have a friend that owns a tire shop and he recommends this. I have 10K on the bike and still have more than half the tread left and no cupping. The optimal amount to run will depend on the tire material and the type of riding, optimal here being to get the longest time out of the tire possible without going to the Max PSI.
