Asked the H.D mechanic at my dealer about the frequent adjustments required. I thought it was the cable stretching from what I`d read on various forums. He said it was the cheap clutch that H.D. is using and it should stabilize after 10,000 mi. His guide is to adj. the cable about 10 times and then start the base adj. at the primary again. I`m easy on clutches and this one needs more attention than I`m used to.

 

Is there enough room to use an 11/16" crows foot wrench?

 

Been doing the clutch adjustments so many years with the covers off almost don't remember.It is certainly no hassle.Once this adjustment is made always tweak at the cable adjuster anyway.

 

Ya, what he said. Makes a huge difference, otherwise it shifts and your setting is not right. Surprised it never mentions this in the service manual. Come to think of it the service manual never mentions tips at all. Those **** types that write tech manuals must have a real sense of humor.

What are you saying happens if you adjust your cable right after draining fluid?? What's the huge difference?

 

my 07 service manual clearly states in the big box that says 'CAUTION' to adjust the clutch when the bike is at room temperature.....

 

3/8" light duty air impact gun, 11/16" deep socket, 7/32" ball end allen, takes less than a minute to adjust a clutch.

Dont forget to put anti-sieze on the cable adjuster threads and a little squirt of WD-40 inside the boot to keep it soft.

 

As I was. Let me be a little more specific. Regarding the posters statement:
"If you're having trouble getting the jam nut put it in gear and apply the back brake."

By putting the transmission in gear and applying the rear brake it makes setting the jam nut much easier because the clutch basket does not turn when you put the 11/16" wrench or socket to it. This is not a big problem if the rear tire is setting on the ground but if the rear wheel is elevated on a lift, then it helps immensely to put the bike in gear and hold the brake when tightening the locking nut. I hope that clears this up. Sorry for the confusion.

I've been adjusting it at the cable, I'm about 3/4's of threads gone
The next Primary change I'll re-index the cable ajustment and "reset" the nut..

Yes, I have plenty of wrenches That I'd love to bend or modify.....

 

I forgot all about this post......I never came back to thank you guys......the adjustment was a breeze and I ended up using one gear wrench's products.....I got a fairly large set at sears for short money.
