Default J&M 5.25" vs 7.25"

I have read through most of the sticky about the 7.25" speakers and haven't really found what I'm looking for. I have a 2000 Electra Glide with the factory head unit and speakers. I am going to do an upgrade, but I am kind of stuck on which way to go. I will be using a 125x2 @ 2 ohms amp in order to get around the requirement of 8 ohm speakers. I was planning on going with the 7.25" speakers, until today. I was at my local dealer and they had just installed the 5.25" speakers and a tweeter pod on a newer Street Glide with the stock head unit with no amp. That thing friggin' rocked...... Now I am kind of torn or confused because I could tell the tweeter pod definately made it sound better when we covered them up, but since there is no amp I don't know what that would do. I can probably spend the price of either the 7.25" and amp, or the amp/5.25"/tweeter pod setup since they will both come in about the same price. Realistically, is there that much noticeable difference between the two speakers sizes? By the way, most of my riding is 55mph plus.

I had the 5's on my 08 Ultra and put the 7's on 2010 CVO Ultra and I found that the 7's were as much better than the 5's were better than the stock. In other words stock=1, 5's=6, and 7's=10+.

Can you elaborate a little on what the sound difference is? Are you running them with an amp? I don't expect to get much bass at all, especially going down the road, but I wondered if the tonal quality of the music is improved on the 7's. Thanks!

IF, you are going to use that amp on your new speakers, then you want to purchase the 2 ohm versions, if not, you want to purchase the 8-ohm versions to work properly with your model year 2000 Harley radio ,,,,,

to answer your question, the J&M grill mounted tweeter and midrange drivers will produce virtually all the highs that the Hog-Tunes tweeter pod will give you ,,, you want to purchase the J&M 7.25" speaker kit, so that you get the REAL bass improvement with the significantly larger main speakers, and still have the crisp mids and highs coming off the J&M grills ,,,,,

I also think the J&Ms look better when mounted,,, instead of the big tweeter pod, but then of course I am biased ,,,,

Got the 5.25 J&Ms installed in my SG and the clarity is much better than the stock speakers though I did opt for the 3 way so I didn't even consider a tweeter pod. I am though going ahead and pick up a couple sheets of sound deadning at the audio store as soon as it warms up to help keep the sound from getting absorbed into the fairing.Oh and no amp.

I can say that I upgraded to the 7.25 and I can turn up my ipod's volumn to just shy of as loud as It can go & volumn at 1/2 on the radio & sound is awesome! Took the bike out for the first ride of the year & the wife says at 70 she can now hear the stereo very loud & very clear! She says she can hear the bass & the highs! Good luck on which you choose! Safe riding!
