I saw one of these at harbor freight:

I bought it since it was so cheap (used the 20%) off coupon too. The last oil change I did it with the bike straight up using this (safety message - tether it to the hooks in front). I used a folded "file folder" and a rag underneath to catch any residue. It wasn't perfect but the motor mounts didn't suffer like they normally do. Clean up was a breeze.

The easiest thing to do is to pull the filter and use electrical contact cleaner (NOT electric motor cleaner) on the area where oil runs during the removal. CRC makes a good cleaner, and it's available at Lowes - near the electrical tools. The cleaner is a great solvent, and one good spray usually cleans the area completely. I put a few blue towels on my lift under the area to catch the run off. Less trouble and faster than screwing with short cuts.

Don't waste your money! I bought one at the local parts store $25. I bought the small one and it would not fit in the hole far enough to do you any good.

I just changed my oil and didn't get a drop on anything.....didn't last time either.
Stuff a rag or two under the oil filter housing. Make a aluniumum foil funnel. Punch hole in bottom of filter and one it top and let drain. All the oil will not drain out, but the funnel and rags will catch what little drips out. I haven't got a drop on anything doing it this way. I do have the HD oil cooler.

(If I get oil on anything next time I will blame this post as a jinx!)
