Default Is it a necessity?

I'm going to put a set of true duals and a K&N filter with new back plate on my SG. Is it necessary to also put a tuner like a Power Commander at the same time, or will my bike run fine with the stock setting? I will eventualy buy one, but would like to know if it has to be at the same time to run correctly.

I would NOT ride / run that bike without a download or a powercommader installed[sm=badidea.gif]. The bike may run way too lean causing problems. You can do it with slip on's but not a full true dual system. Hope this helps !!!

You probably should do something, but it doesn't necessarily have to be a Power Commander. You need to richen the A/F mix a little, and for that purpose, a DFO will do the trick. It is not nearly as precise as the PC nor does it provide a way to alter ignition timing, but it will get you the fuel you need, and it is MUCH less expensive. If and when you decide you want a Power Commander, you can sell the DFO---or if you make no other alterations, you may decide to just stay with the DFO.

Harley has a module that they call a Fuel Tuner. I have one on my '04...........bike runs superbly and is never in a lean condition.

im running mine, with v & h tru duals, k & n, stage one download from the factory and thats it
i took the pc III off, as i had trouble with it.
the bike is going to pop some on decel, but it should not run lean, if anything
mine is running a bit rich, according to the plugs, and im getting 200mi per tank if i stay off the throttle

i would say no, its not totally needed. more hype than anything, and i ve had this bike for year, it has 11,000 mi on it, of which 7,000 i put on since last oct when i got it

Best way to figure it out, is to do your mods and then keep an eye on the plugs. grey/brown is a normal color indicating good combustion. dk grey/black is rich, lt grey/white is lean. if you see you're running lean, then you can have a download done to the factory ECM or add a PC III. PC III covers more changes than the factory tuner downloads. Your projected mods aren't all that radical.
