Well said, CroK. Fuel injected bikes will smoke a little black when started cold. This is normal due to the enrichened mixture. This is all handled by the EFI similar to choking a carbureted bike.

 

Thanks for the feedback guys. I have had several people also say valve seals and or guides. I am going to attempt to talk to mech. doing repairs and ask if he had done any type of compression test and how did they determine it needed rings. Seems like the valve seals makes more sense to me. But the tech dept in Milwalkee and the local dealer says rings.

 

No, new rings will NOT remedy condensation. Actually NOTHING will...

Condensation is a result of the combustion process. H20 is a byproduct of burning fuel in a compressed atmosphere. If what you have is just condensation, the only thing you need to know is that depending on the ambient temperature the condensation will appear to be greater on some days and less on others.

Even if you do not see any condensation, it is still present. This is one reason why people suggest that those who store their bikes during the winter should resist the urge to crank them up for short periods. This causes the condensation to build up inside the motor. And if the motor is not run for a suficient time period after it has reached normal operating temperature, the accumulation of water from condensation in the engine will contaminate the oil. Then sitting for a few months until riding season comes around again, exacerbates the deterioration of the oil and can possibly cause rust to form in and around the valve train/cylinders/rings/crankshaft and bearings.

One last time, condensation is normal. It is not an indicator that you have a problem to be concerned about with your engine...

 

Watch you dipstick very closely and see if it is using any oil at all. If it's using oil it's likely valves or rings. If not, most likely condesation or fuel issue.

 

Before I added a tuner my 08 smoked a little @ start up.Black sooty smoke,you could smell the raw gas.It'd go away after a few seconds.

 

Another dealer without a clue. Smoke, oil smoke only at start-up is most probably valve seals and /or guides. Ring problems will cause smoke at all times when running.

If its the rings its a good time to do the 103 . Probally condesation though if it is smoking as much as you say you should see your oil lvl drop. Might try changing your oil to and see if there is any water in it. Someone on the forum was saying they found water in their oil after cold starts and not letting the engine reach full temp to burn off condensation thus creating more. I think he got a few ounces out during his spring oil change.

 

it's smoking out of the right pipe because that's the one which most of the exhaust comes out. condensation is the humidity in the air, if you've noticed late model cars will actually drip for a while when you first start them. same thing, but your mufflers are heating up, thereby creating a steam sort of effect. it will be more pronounced if the ambient air temp is lower though. you shouldn't notice it much as the temp outside starts getting warmer.
