Default Belt Deflection

My owner's manual says to check my belt deflection with wheel in the air OR on the jiffy stand. While in the air, I adjusted to 3/8". When I got it back on the ground, it read around 7/8" and my belt made a whirring sound when I slowed down. Any suggestions as to how I'm supposed to do it?

Stick your hand behind the belt guard, grab the belt between your thumb and forefinger, take your two fingers and twist it. If it twists about 45 degrees you're good.

Yup, my technique also.

If it twists more than 45*..to loose, can't make 45*...to tight.

Make sure you're midway of the two pulleys also.

I bought the handy dandy tool, so I'll probably use it then I can give'er the twist test. I guess my question should have been which reading do I go by;floor or up in air?

I don't have a manual handy, but when I adjust my dirt bike chains, the rider is on the bike due to the length differences from the swingarm to the countershaft sprocket when the suspension is loaded or unloaded.

However, when i adjust my belt (which has been only once in 25k miles) it was on the jiffy stand.

good luck
