Default Removing IDS

Has anyone removed the IDS on there IDS equipped bike? Just curious to see what the reasons were to remove and what the results were.

I added the IDS to my 2007 SEUC. A big Improvement, I don't see why you would take it off. The 2007's did not come with the IDS but use the same part as the 2008.

I had a custom 5 1/2" wheel made and considered removing it. I decided to keep it, from all that I read about the 07's clangin' and bangin' with the fix of installing the IDS. It's a ugly piece and thankfully hidden by the bags.

My '07 doesn't clang and bang. Some '07s, not all, had a noise in sixth gear that was annoying to a lot of folks and the IDS seemed to cure it. I never added one because I don't believe in adding stuff I don't need. The added bonus of not having it is not worrying about the bearing going bad, more than a few have had this problem, or the rubber wearing out. A lot of guy here will disagree and want one simply because they are available or because somebody else has one. If you feel you need it fine. If you don't use one your bike will run just fine.

Never heard of an IDS where the rubber wore out. I know of 10 and 15 year old Honda's with their "cush drive" (pretty much the same as IDS) that never wore out either. If I was a worrier that would give me something new to worry about.

I rode my 07 the first 7,000 miles without IDS, and after installing IDS it was like a whole nother bike. Mine didn't clang and bang per se, but it was 100% smoother after the mod.

My friend added a IDS to his 07 SE Ultra and he claimed it was a completely different , smoother riding bike too. Also claimed the "noises" went away also.

I will also add my 08' SG bearing outer cage seal fell out after 5500 miles, WTF? Only thing I can figure out is the crush between the IDS bearing and rubber drive blocks is just enough "out" that the IDS inner bearing race is spaced from the wheel bearing and cups inward when the axle is tightened, thus poping the seal and eventually the bearing. How did I fix it?....removed the factory wheel and made new wheel hubs with what we believe IS the correct crush, i.e. "none". 6500 additional miles and no further issue.

It makes the bike quieter, I got one for free with a set of wheels I bought and it did make a difference.
It is designed to take the shock out of the drive train.

130 torque makes mince meat of the rubbers after about 15000 miles ,but this is no big deal the rubbers are cheap, the bike is so much smoother with the IDS that I would not ride with out it ,I had to put my stock 07 sprocket back on for awhile because none of the dealers around me had the rubbers in stock so I had to wait a week to get them,I was glad to get the IDS back on when the rubbers came in,as far as the bearing goes mine has been good with over 20000 miles on it,and as a an added bonus of the IDS it acts as somewhat of a crank saver .
