cam selection
building a SE110, 10.5/1 pistons, port/polishing 58mm throttle body, in a bagger. looking for low end torque obviously, have a couple cams in mind SE259E,579 lift, intake closes 47 abdc, 269 duration sounds pretty good wouldn't m ind a little more lift though. the 263E cam gives more, .637, intake closes at 53 deg but even HD says its a wide open throttle torque and hp grind. Redshift has a 657 lift intake closes at 45 degrees with a 252 duration, much more in the low end torque range. also with that much lift, I might have to flycut pistons, not sure about that yet, though. looking for some feedback on this, only want to do it once!! I'm funny like that!!. I am a mechanic (40 years, mercedes, know my stuff pretty much!) have done many hd's just not the 110 for a bagger, more just plain go fast style bikes. so experienced advise very welcome

Bigboyz has a nice cam comparator on their website that allows you to compare three cams at the same time which may be helpful in considering various cam timing, lift, etc.:

Generally speaking, the earlier the intake valve closes, the earlier the torque occurs. For baggers, a lot of folks are happy with an intake close of about 40* for early torque.
PM Dalton and PhilM; very knowledgeable and helpful guys.
Good luck with your build.

hey charlie, you obviously have too much compression for the 255's. my build is done as of today, 103" forged pistons, 10.5 compression, manual compression releases, and the se 259E cams. this is a new kit that harley has in their supplemental screamin eagle catalog. i'd think that with the 110" those 259E cams would work great. if i'd not gone for the high compression, i'd probably have used the 255's, but compression builds torque, so that's where i'm at. it was dynoed today, and tomorrow i'll drive up to tulsa to see how it sounds with the vance and hines pro pipe. it ought to be a ripper, and still have good bottom end torque. you'll have considerably more with the additional seven cubic inches working for you. keep us posted, it sounds like a great plan you've got in motion though. remember sometimes big numbers are like big carbs. you've seen guys trying to run a holley 750 double pumper on a smogger 305 chevy before, and others who get a extremely radical cam in their car, and both of those guys are just wasting their time with those big numbers. to be a bit conservative ain't always a bad thing, especially if you want to enjoy riding it rather than it becoming something that's so tempermental that it's a pain to start, and just runs fantastic at an rpm that you will not see. i think after a lot of thought on my build, i ended up with a good recipe. pm me later after you decide please, i'd like to know what you end up deciding on for cams and how they worked out for you.. good luck, sounds like a good build.

found just the cams I was looking for, Dave Mackie has them .598 lift 264 duration, and intake closes right at 50abdc (that so called magic number! ha), after talking with dave, I am going to have him do the headwork as well, seems very well qualified to do a good job just for the record, all the se 110'd come with the 255 cam in them so I knew I needed more, as these are very mild cams. I'll keep you all posted on results, thanks for all the input
