Default How do you remove C-clamp on clutch handle?

Guys,

When I got my harley in 2008 I was a mechanical idiot. Now I do all the maintenance including the brake pads. Bought a lot of tools since then and even have a lift.

This stuff does not come easy to me. I am usually a little afraid that I am gonna brake something and I proceed very carefully. But once I learn it it is a piece of cake next time.

I tired to do the clutch lube for the first time and when I went to remove the C clamp underneath the clutch hanlde it was very frustrating. It is in a hard place to work from below and my pliers could not grab it. How do I do this?

Also, since I have your attention, do I need to loosen the clutch adjuster on the cable to be able to losen the clutch cable at the handle? Thanks

I believe it's a c-clip with holes on the ends so a pair of snap ring pliers would be the right tool, but you could also stick a small flat blade screwdriver under it and pry it off. Adjust your cable to get the slack to remove it from the perch and lever.

you need a really small set of snap ring pliers. that'll make it super simple. and yes, you'll need to adjust the cable to give you enough slack at the handle.

maybe you mean the outside retaining ring? You need snap ring pliers to grab it properly but you may get lucky using your fingernails to spread it apart. thats a good way to lose it though.

If none of that stuff above works try using...snap ring pliers.

Just so's you know, the retaining clip sits in a groove and it can be spun around so that if you think the two holes are in a tight spot, spin it until it's where you want it. Then you can get the small snap ring pliers up into the holes. Sears has a great pair of reversible ones for internal and external snap rings.

And go buy another snap retaining ring. You could have it fly away on you or you can spread it too far making it unusable.

Best to put a new tight one back on.
