About as close as I ever came to wrecking...
Wow!
Went for a ride on Sat night, and coming up US 61-67 (a four lane with turn lane), I was rounding a moderate right hand curve with a decent head of steam and right in front of me, I see a what I thought was a piece of cardboard laying in the road. Turns out it was a construction speed limit sign, laying facedown all all but impossible to see untill you are right on top of it.
I grabbed ahold of some brakes, and thought I could avoid it. I was wrong, I drove right over the top of the damn thing while heeled over for the turn. I let off the front brake as soon as I realized that I would hit it, and that probably saved my bacon. The front end washed out as soon as I rolled across it (aluminum signage being notorious for its low co-efficient of friction on asphalt), and hooked up with a snap after I rolled off of it.
Of course, I was still on the back brakes when the rear tire rolled up onto the sign. The back end stepped out and I did a long, lurid dirt-track style slide. When the rear tire finally rolled off the sign, I was almost full lock sideways, still doing about 40 or so. The resultant high-side almost pitched me totally off the bike, but somehow I managed to stay on. I did wind up crossing both oncoming lanes trying to gather it up, and at the end wound up sitting on the opposite shoulder shaking like a freezing wet dog. Luckilly, there was no oncoming traffic, or I would be in a bad way right now.
Moral of the story, even something thin and flat can bite your ***

I take no credit for the save. I can only thank an especially loving God, who had nothing else going on that night.
Appearently, all the times I donated my milk money to the orphans finally paid off. [sm=grinangel.gif]
