Default Police tire

When I bought my 08 police bike, the sales guy repeated easily 3-4 times that I had police tires.
The tires have only 3,500 miles and look pretty good. Should I be concerned about this? why would he insist so much on this??

Well there actually is a Police Grade Tire for motorcycles and the difference is the sidewall. The sidewall is much stiffer so in the event of a flat the tire still stands up.
While it is not a bad idea the ride quality is stiffer and the tire themselves may be
difficult to find as it probably is not a stocking item for most stores.

I also think they don't recommend riding 2 up on the police tires. I'd use them and replace with your choice of tires when you have used them up.

there used to be a warning sticker under the seat that stated the run flat (police) tires are not certified for 2 up riding

Wow, intersting since the dealer changed the seat and installed a dual seat.
Something to consider, I'm wondering if I should replaced them now since my wife rides once in a while with me.

It won't hurt to use the tires running 2-up. The reason that they're not certified for 2-up riding is that the run-flat characeristic of the tire is adversly affected with more weight.
The tires will work fine, but in the event of a flat, you may not have the run-flat characteristic that the tires were were touted as having. Same as any other tire.

Great!, this is good to know. I was having a chat with my wife about this and she was overly concerned about riding with me again
It's good to know that it will behave similar to other tire.

The front tire has the same load rating as the 402's but the rear tire has less load rating as the stock 402's. If you and your wife and the weight of the bike are within the load capacity use them, but if your combined weights are more than the load capacity change them out. The load capacity is on the sidewall. I used to remember but it is around 110 lbs less capacity for the police tire. One other hazard is that when the tire is low on air the side wall is stiff enough it still looks fine. If run when too low they will overheat and can come off rim at high speed. They are not designed to actually run flat but just keep the tire on the rim long enough to get safely off the road. I am a motor and I can see no advantage to the run flats vs the 402. Both handle the same.
