ABS vs. Non-ABS
#22
I have owned an ABS bike in the past for 50k miles and don't miss it, having sold that bike. The impression I have from reading HDF commentators is that Harley has set their ABS up so it activates too soon. By working in pretty tame conditions it is convincing owners it is doing a good job, but is giving a false sense of security.

Have rode BMW bikes with ABS since the early 80's. This is my first Harley with ABS. It ain't as sophisticated as BMW's but I wouldn't ride without it. You only need it once to make it worth the money. I'm almost 65 and it has saved my a__! several times over the years. I have almost 200,000 miles on BMW's and over 20,000 on the Harley.

So you have never been in a position that you have had to lock up the brakes?
Having ABS doesn't make you careless, I would hope that it doesn't make you think you can follow closer, ect... But it can just make a hairy situation a little less hairy I think. I have not been "Saved" by mine yet. Only got 38 miles on my bike so far. BUT In my several hundred thousand miles I have on two wheels, and have most certainly had " A few" times I probably would have been glad I had it. (Although I have never had to lay a bike down while panic stopping, I have had close calls)

If you ever get a chance to tour the Tomahawk, Wisconsin HD plant ..... DO IT.
You would soon find out that what HD makes there is not just stamped out plastic parts.
I was totally blown away when I saw that HD uses a PLASMA technology to treat the edges of
tourpaks, fairings and saddlebags to strengthen them against cracking.

No question is a bad question, no matter what it is. If somebody is tired of seeing it, why the he!! do they stop to read it and further more comment on it? I been riding over 40 years. I didnt have ABS on my a bike until this one. I didnt have it on a car until a few years ago and didn't think I liked it on a car until I had to slam on my brakes over a hill to prevent from hitting a school bus. I have had no problems with it on this bike. If I ever buy another bike, I will get it on that bike too.
