Most everybody here has dropped it more than once, I know I have. The only damage I ever got was a scratch on the engine guard. i've since put leather engine guards on so what I can't see doesn't bother me.

It can happen to anyone. But if you're stopped and it happens, (kind of like in slow motion) usually no damage, or at least very minimal. If you're moving and she goes down, well that's a whole nother story. All bets are off at that point.

Hit an asphalt snake in the rain, last summer, turning into an inclined drive at about 10 MPH. Threw me and my rider off. Because of the incline, the bike rolled past the first contact with the crash bars over onto its top. On its left side with the handle bars turned left it slid about 8 feet before stopping. The only damage was a skuff on the batwing, the windshield, the saddlebag latch, a tourpack hinge and the highway peg.

We picked it up and finished our 3400 mile vacation without any other incidents.

Thanks for all of the info, my father has not ridden in 30+ years and went through a kind of midlife crises and bought a 2008 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic Peace Officer Edition. He has been a little worried about the weight (the largest bike he had before was a 650). I belief being rid of the worry that if he drops his prized toy it will be thousands of dollars worth of damage will make him enjoy it a lot more. He will be touching up his skills on the 1200 sportster we just purchased for me to complete his dream of riding father and son on Harleys. The sportster is really a family bike that all of us can learn on (the sacrificial lamb).

Here are some pics of the Peace Officer Editition

and the sportster

And don't do it in front of a bike hangout, like Neptune's Net, with 100 people watching you. Not that I have.
