My Fluke multimeter came with a type K thermocouple. Just for a sanity check this summer, I rode the bike for about a half hour on the highway then pulled into a rest stop, pulled out the oil filler cap and put the thermocouple in. The oil temp was 240. It may not be as accurate as the HD and I may not be able to see the temp all of the time but at least I know everything is ok and now I don't have to worry about it. On the plus side, I still have my $140.

Yup
I been usein' one of them in my potato bike oil hole...deep fryer...sump place for a while.
So far, no broken glass in the hole.
Summer time after a long ride it says like 220 to 250 *F.
Around 40*, after 40 mile ride home from work, mostly at 70 mph, it says about 170.
Around 40* with nylon lowers about 190*F
