What ever works for you. I don't know about sticking it in and riding around the block. Doesn't it hurt when you sit on the seat?

My Fluke multimeter came with a type K thermocouple. Just for a sanity check this summer, I rode the bike for about a half hour on the highway then pulled into a rest stop, pulled out the oil filler cap and put the thermocouple in. The oil temp was 240. It may not be as accurate as the HD and I may not be able to see the temp all of the time but at least I know everything is ok and now I don't have to worry about it. On the plus side, I still have my $140.

Are you going to check again (under approximately the same weather condiions) to see how Jamie's Stage 1 has affected your sump temps?? If you do, I'd definitely be interested in seeing the results.

Anyone know what would happen if the glass tube breaks in the engine and leaks the mercury into the oil???

Mark,

Yes when the salt is gone and the temps are similar I planned to do it again. I will keep you up to date.

Yup
I been usein' one of them in my potato bike oil hole...deep fryer...sump place for a while.
So far, no broken glass in the hole.
Summer time after a long ride it says like 220 to 250 *F.
Around 40*, after 40 mile ride home from work, mostly at 70 mph, it says about 170.
Around 40* with nylon lowers about 190*F
