I am riding my Harley Davidson Road King for the first time in my life today when I get off work. I am a little nervous I took the motorcycle class & we only did the course & riding in the parking lot of the college. I am following behind my Husband this afternoon. Any words of advice. somewhat nervous.
I am 6'3", 205 lbs. In 2004 when I started riding I was 190 lbs, and worked out regularly. I took the BRC. and a friend lent me a Virago 250, which I rode for a week, 70 miles.
Then he lent me a '99 Electraglide Standard, and we went on a 500 mile weekend ride. I had no business being on such a big bike bike. Especially on interstate ramps. I didn't know how to lean. I muscled my way through awkwardly.
I bought a Kawasaki Vulcan 750, because I couldn't afford a Harley. It was 475 lbs, half the weight of a touring bike. I rode it for 7 years/20k miles. I learned how to handle rain, gravel, tar snakes, proper lines in curves, etc.. on a forgiving bike.
In 2011, I bought a 2003 FLHTCUI.
I love this bike, but it is hard work learning how to control it, with mastery. Especially panic braking. Don't use a Road King for your first bike. Is your husband experienced?

I don't recommend a touring bike for any new rider, man or woman. There are many threads on this. Usually the OP doesn't follow the advice of the experienced riders.

Several years ago, I was at a local dealer during their "Demo Days" and I was riding about everything they had. I wanted to ride a RK Classic, but a lady was standing there also wanting to ride the same bike, so I backed off and took the bike next to it, a Sportster. We left the parking lot and came to a stop at the first street light and she put her foot down, but couldn't hold the bike at a stop, so it went on over on its side. I helped her get the bike back up and she asked to trade bikes right there on the spot because she didn't realize how heavy the RK would be.
So, I'm OK with women trying to ride the touring bikes if they have the length in their legs and the strength to handle the weight. But, I think most of them don't, so it's nice to see them move to something they can handle.
