Default ? for those that changed from HD oil to Amsoil

About 5,000 miles ago, at about 20K I started using Amsoil, 20W-50 in my 01 RK and have since noticed a significant decrease in oil use. I was while still with HD oil adding a half to a quart and a half every 1K miles, depending on riding style. Now with the Amsoil that has dropped to less than half the amount. Just curious if any of you have made the change and if so did you notice a difference one way or the other. And if you are thinking to yourself 25K on an 01, work and travel had a big impact on my riding opportunities. Being laid off since June I have been riding quite a bit more.

I'd question that oil usage with 5000 miles, much less 1000 miles.
That seems excessive to me.

I have noticed that once I changed to Syn. (Mobil 1 or Amsoil) on used
scoots, I soon need to change the base gaskets. Happened on an 93 and
a 97...Good luck! Tenn.Vol.

Well if he lets the bike sit that long it will evaporate. J/K

Amsoil is good oil for sure but dont think it would have an impact on leaking /burning usage.

Going through 1-1/2 quarts of oil every 1,000 miles??? What kind of riding style is that? Redlining before every shift?

Yea I had a nightrain before the RK and used the harley oil and it burned alot of oil and that bike only had 2800miles on it when i got it, I have used the Amsoil on my RK since about 3k miles or so and have not burned one drop of oil, I am sure it has to do with the chemical stability and resistance to heat that this stuff has, It seems to hold its viscosity even when oil temps are above 250 degrees F.

My Evo's always seemed to use a little oil - made no difference whether it was syn or dino and nearly every model-year had some with base gasket problems. My oil usage seemed to be mostly due to carry-over.
I've had 4 twincams now and have yet to have one that used any oil regardless of type. I don't personally know anyone that has had any oil usage issues either. 1/2 to 1-1/2 qts. every 1,000 mi. is definitely excessive - there's only 4 qts. in the system. I'd have that baby checked out.

Base gaskets on Evos . . . . had to change mine too regardless of oil type

I went to the Amsoil at the 1000k service and while neither of my harleys have used oil, (never had to add oil) and yes i check the oil, it definitely helps with running cooler and quieter. I run the Spectro 6speed oil in the tranny and makes a big difference as well.
