Drain Plug
I am curious what the pipe plug next to the engine drain plug on a '09 model is holding back.
The manual states not to remove this plug, just kinda wondering what is behind it.
Anyone care to speculate?

It's just a plug..you can take it out and install an oil temp sensor there if you like..

So, is it just an opening to the oil tank?

Check out photo "S". It is an oil pickup passage in the pan casting that directs the oil flow upward. It passes thru a secondary passageway in the transmission housing and from there the oil flow begins/repeats the oil flow circuit.
Like flhxkiller mentioned, many remove the plug and replace it with an oil temperature sensor unit.
