Default Never thought it would happen!

This should go in that stupid things done thread!

On sat. I was replacing the broken glovebox door spring on my Road Glide.
I had the bike on the Red jack lifted just enough to keep it straight and yes it was not locked.
I had the fairing off as well as the door.Well it was time to go to the local ACE to look for a spring. The dealer cant get one, whole different story.
I was gone about 30 min. When I pulled up to the drive way,my wife opened the garage door making all these motions.I thought she was worried I was going to back into her car.
When I got out of the car I saw it.My bike was leaning at a 45 deg. angle on the jack handle!I thought au ****!
We both uprighted the bike.

The damage..........The right side saddle bag lid popped open on impact. There was a white 3" long scuff mark on the lid and rear a little mark on the bottom corner.
The A/C cover took the brunt of the the fall.It has a quarter size ding on it where it hit the jack locking lever. The impact twisted the cover sideways which also made the Zippers element look like an accordion.
Here where I lucked out.The jack handle barely hit the gas tank at the right end where the weld is.It has a tiny red mark. The handle also left a little red mark and ding on the propipe.
I was able to rub out the marks on the paint.

Lesson learned!

I guess it can happen with any lift, but I just don't like those floor lifts at all. At least there wasn't a lot of damage.

Did the jack fail, or was the bike not balanced on the jack? When I lower my bike, the bike always goes away from handle onto jiffy stand.

Yep, NEVER trust a hydraulic jack, even the best ones will leak down eventually, especially when they get older. Always use the lock.

Happened to me a little different without the fall over. I had my bike strapped to the jack when mine bled down from not locking the jack. The bike stayed upright, thank goodness. The thought of it falling over was scary enough that I make a conscious effort to lock at all time.

It could have been worse! We all learn by our mistakes. I bet you will never let it happen again.
