Harley-Davidson discovered a defect affecting certain 2009 and 2010 Touring family vehicles through its own testing process, the company said in a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration late last month.
The company received no reports of fire, injuries or fatalities related to the issue, it said in the letter.

Harley voluntarily recalled the motorcycles because frontal fuel tank mounts might distort during a frontal crash, which could cause a fuel leak, according to the company.

The leaked fuel could cause injury or death if ignited, the company said.

The company's Springettsbury Township plant manufactures Touring motorcycles.

Harley-Davidson did not specify the defect's origin in its letter to NHTSA and has not publicly characterized the issue beyond the letter, company spokesman Bob Klein said.

The company did not provide a breakout of costs related to the recall, Klein said.

The recall involves 111,569 motorcycles, Harley said in its letter to the NHTSA.

Harley dealerships will install braces to reduce the distortion free of charge beginning on or about Monday.

"The leaked fuel could cause injury or death if ignited, the company said."

If the "frontal crash" doesn't do the job.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, too.

from the other threads on this, the tank mounts are weak and could split or peel the welds of the tank. the report says severe front impact but really... a slow speed impact could be surviable, but then burst into flame afterward...

It's nice the MOCO fessed up and ratted on themself then volunteered to fix it at their expense.

Now I waana see them step up and admit to a few other things..Things like IDS and a missing third link and a weak comp sprocket and crank runnout and cracked exhaust headers and all those things that make a Harley so special......Kinda like Microsoft makes us windows users have to become computer experts instead of simply computer users.

One big difference, Microsoft does not have to follow rules set by the EPA.

I love my bike and hate Microsoft!!

How long until we get the recall notice, or will they classify this a another TSB and wait till the owner complains with the proper wording to qualify?

Maybe it's the things that may cause "death or serious injuries" that they are worried about, not inconvenience. It sounds like you may have chose the wrong motorcycle.
