Default Removing "buttons" on floating rotors

Does anybody know the proper tool and/or the proper way to remove those buttons on floating rotors in order to separate the rotor from the carrier? (not the stock rotors) I saw a tool years ago for sport and sport-touring bikes, but hadn't seen anything recently. I'm getting a pair of new H-D rotors that are not available in black and wish to remove the rotor from the carrier in order to powdercoat it the right way. Also, it's way cheaper to powdercoat just the carrier without having to tape off the actual rotor and buttons. Besides, I'd have concerns about warping a rotor after cooking it around 450 degrees for 20 minutes or so.

If I can't get the buttons off, does anyone know if a rotor could take that kind of heat safely without any adverse effects?

It's those finishing touches that can frustrate us the most!

Thanks for any input.

i've used a wide flathead screwdriver and a hammer to punch out the c-clips on a different motorcycle. just use two pieces of wood to set the rotor on. this may work for yours if it has c-clips.

Now that would be fortunate if these are that style of button. I haven't received the rotors yet and I wasn't able to get a close enough look at them on the bike I saw. Would be awesome if your right. The older ones I saw years ago (not H-D stuff) had these little holes on the back side that some tool fit into to help with the release of the buttons and that's what I thought I might be looking at when they arrive.
If I do find out for sure, I'll post the info of course.

Thanks!

It is true floating rotors once had detachable buttons, but I think you will find modern ones are not detachable. I have them on two bikes and neither of them are. That may not apply to all brands, so you could be lucky.

What he said. The H-D floaters are not detachable.

Well, they're technically detachable, just not re-attachable.

I thought those buttons were applied like rivets are.

And, IMO, 450 degree oven should not hurt a rotor. They take more heat than that on the bike/car/whatever. I've been wrong before though....

I had no issue PC-ing my old 1-piece rotors.

Instead of masking off the rotor why not get the whole thing powder coated and then have them turned?
