dont want to screw things up? Get the shop manual.. Cheap insurance. It has lots of great photos showing you exactly what to do.

Otherwise try google:

Its a softy but you get the idea.

Switch to K&N oil filters, the nut on the end of the filter is a great idea.

Welcome to HD, You will get a lot of different opinions about what's the best oil. Just use common sense. These are air cooled engines and get pretty hot in the summer month's. If you get caught in traffic, your oil temp's can get up close to 300 degree's. I've tried different oil's over the year's and believe Amsoil is the best you can use in a Harley engine. I don't sell Amsoil, in fact I wish it was sold in places like Walmart and was a little cheaper. The Dealer that services my bike sell's it. I'll also add if you do some checking, you'll find out that HD Syn3 is not full synthetic. JMO

Definately get a service manual. It should be a must for anyone. They are a wealth of infomation that will answer just about any question you might have.

I highly recommend getting an owner's manual and a service manual. You will find them both to be very helpful.

Ronp42, Syn3 is a full synthetic. However HD also sells a synthetic blend. It is not branded as syn3 it is a screaming eagle oil also. (it has the black label, syn3 has the orange label).
Having said all of this I use Amsoil. If I remember right and I could be wrong I think the HD oil first came out as a blend. Now to the original poster, get the manual and use a good oil. You will get many opinions here on a brand of oil. You will just have to use what you like and can get easily. Some brands are not available everywhere.
