Default more horsepower for 04 ultra

Have an 04 ultra.Other than some loud pipes the prior owner put on it is stock.Question, what is the best way to get 10 more hosepower out of it,other than putting a 103 kit on it?It has 70,000 miles on it but runs perfect.I think a 103 kit would cost me about 4 grand.64 horsepower just isnt enough for an 850 pound bike.A 95 inch kit would give more power but dont know how the original lower end would hold up to a new topend.Probably 5 horsepower could be had by stage one,but think i need 10 more.Passing cars requires downshift unless i have lots of room and level ground to do it on.When my wife and i were in sturgis no ones bike ran as well because of the elevation, but all my riding will be here on lowland territory.Do you really feel the difference from a stage 1 kit?

How about going 95" and a set of cams along with a tuner? I think that would work nicely for you. Could be had total for about $2k

Yep, what Dawg said. You could opt for the 95", or up to a 98" from some of the site sponsors and shops discussed here and in the engine forum. The bottom end really shouldn't be a concern for a big bore build. Torque is the name of the game, not the horsepower. A big bore with a good cam and tune would give you a stump puller, especially compared to just the pipes and air cleaner upgrade.

If I had it to do over again, I'd just save my money until I was ready for the big bore and do it all at once. Live and learn.

When my '06 was still a stock 88" motor I added a true dual exhaust, Ness Big Sucker air cleaner and a DynoJet PCIII. No stock 96" bikes (w/ comparable mods) could stay with my 88 incher. Most of this was due to a gearing change in '07 (taller). You should easily get 10 more hp doing something similar and you will definitely feel the difference.
My 88" motor is now 95" , 10.5-1 compr., gear drive cammed motor with headwork that runs 104 hp/ 106 tq. and now has 16K+ miles with that configuration with zero problems. I do have to run premium and average 44 mpg (with a high of 50). It's a blast to ride and cost me about $4K. Unless there is a need (crank run-out) to split the cases it isn't really necessary for making some fun power. Anything over 90 hp/tq will surely make you smile.

All these sound like good ideas.Ididnt want to spend much money, but realize it costs a lot to get any power out of these motors.I dont expect a 900 pound bike to be a tire burner.Stump puller like one guy said is what I want.i dont ride fast anyway.

If that's what you want then how about just doing a stage one with a good low end torque cam?

I dont know much about these engines.Iknow there are as many cam varieties as there are accessories almost.I think the 95 inch kit will suit all my needs.

I went with the 98" for about 4 grand. Man, was it worth it. From 66 hp to 94hp and from 70 lb tq to 110 lb tq and from 40 mpg to 47 mpg. And a helluva lot more fun to ride. My indy told me he could get up 105 hp, but my mileage would suffer. I told him I'd rather have the mileage.I didn't have the build to race, but I still like to get stupid every now and again. It's a guy thing.
