Default Stripped Primary Drain Hole

So I got a new torque wrench today. I start to use it to tighten my primary drain plug. Well, it looks as if I did not have it set correctly so I stripped the threads in my primary drain hole. It looks like I'm off to get a tap and die set in the morning. Could I do it with the inner primary still attached? Yes, I'd be careful to remove and metal shavings after completion. Do drain plugs come in standard dimensions? Anything else I may need to know? Thanks!

I would suggest trying one of those oversized oil drain plugs or even a piggyback style (plug threads into another plug). You may have to use one different o-ring now instead of 3 11105's for your fluid changes which kinda sucks.

pack the flutes on the tap with grease it will hold most of the shavings.

I ended up using an oversized 1/2" self tapping drain plug that came with a nylon washer (and thread sealer). No leaks thus far. Does anyone foresee any issues with this? If that ends up being a problem, I like the piggyback plug solution from the link Dawg gave.

I'll remember this the next time I'm considering tapping myself. With my track record for stripping bolts, I'm sure I'll need it. Thanks.

It should tap out to the next size pipe threads easily. No torque wrench on the new plug. Just slightly past snug with some hydraulic thread sealant on the threads does the trick for me. No leaks and it's never fallen out. If you use thread tape: one wrap on those tiny threads is all you need.
