$1500 under MSRP and no fees...
So, I had a guy come and look at my Roadstar on Saturday and he was very interested - said he will go to the bank Monday at check out the financing - I know it's not over 'til it's over, but this prompted me to visit my local Harley dealer to revisit the idea of buying a new Road King ('09 or '10) or purchase one of the used ones I've been looking at.
The salesman offered a 2010 RK Classic with MSRP of 17,999 (no ABS or Security) for $1000 less than MSRP with no fees ($750) and said if I bought before the end of the month he's sure he could get $1500 off MSRP.
Now, I am looking at a couple private sellers - one is a 2007, burgandy/cream with 3000 miles with ALL the chrome you can put on it, V&H tru-duals, big bore kit, cams and pistons, braided lines, etc., etc. "asking price" of $15,500 or an '06 black with 8600 miles, stage 1, V&H tru-dual, detachable fairing "asking" $14,750. There is also a really mint 2000 RKC with only 13,000 asking $12,000 and an '03 w/ 22,000 miles at $10,000
MY QUESTION IS THIS: Would you rather have a new bike with the advantage of NEW and warranty at that deal and have to spend money on all the upgrades (because I do want the upgrades) or buy a slightly used bike already set-up?

There are lots of bikes for sale. Pick one and ride.
I'd recomend an 09 or newer for the new frame and fat rear tire.
You might think all those used bikes might have what you want, but you will still ad stuff. You ain't done. You ain't never done.
Any bike with a motor build was probably had the crap ran out of it, that's why he built the motor. Do you want a used bike that has had the crap ran out of it?

I recently faced the same choice. I decided to actually spend a little more to start out with a new bike to personalize the way I want it. As noted, no matter how loaded it seems and how much the options seem like ones you would select, the bike is never truly yours until you make it so.
As also noted related to motor mods, you don't build the motor up to treat it nice.. you build them to run hard. I would be "guarded" in buying a built motor unless I knew the seller well.
Good luck with your hunt
