I tried the Autolite 4163 and bike wouldn't idle. I agree with LW Bob that these new systems (SERT) are more sensitive. There was an article in HOt Bike JUL 95 and the stock plugs with a hot coil, better wires and gapped .060 provided the best perf and mpg's in the old EVO but things were alot more simple then.
4163 is one step colder but shouldn't have made a difference.
All I can say is one of the most respected tuners that has frequented this forum and others recommends them as an alternative.
Probably like discussing which is the best oil.
Not all plugs are compatible with HD's ignition's "ion sensing" subsystem used on late
models with oxygen sensors. Check under the ignition forum for more info on this. It's
my understanding this system needs to see what it wants to see, i.e. resistance, etc.
I have TMax ECM with A/t, the stock ECM is in the basement where it can't see.

NVSTEVE - Google Harley Davidson ion sensing system - good explaination. Then get
an Autolite and a HD plug. Use an ohm meter to measure the internal resistance and
you will see there is a significant difference - the Autolite will have only half as much
which, in theory, should be better - not. The system becomes unbalanced. There are
numerous posts on various sites that confirm this - not just my opinion. I am a KISS
person but technology has advanced to where you can't even tuneup your own car
without an expensive scanner. IMO.
Has anyone changed out there standard spark plugs and installed the Autolite XS-4164 in there 96 motor and how do you like them
The 4164 is the stock heat range, but I've been using the colder 4163 plugs for about two years. The results are excellent, and these plugs work fine with the bike's ion-sensing knock detection.

All I can say is that I switch back to stock plug and problem went away. It was a really hot day and maybe it was just a fluk.
Got the autolite 4164 from my indy yesterday. My sparkplug socket won't fit. Why are they not the same size? It takes 11/16 socket (18mm). Now have to go buy new socket.
