I just painted my bike with two colors of "pearl", white and silver, used BASF materials, spent almost $1K. These guys had some clear coat that was $600 a gallon. I about "S---". It does look good. I now see why some of these super "trick" custom paint jobs are $5K up in price, its a LOT of work to paint a big bike with fairings, saddle bags, etc. I had a paint booth full of parts. The prep work took a lot of hours.
I put hard bags on my rk custom, (real red) and it was real expensive. 200 for a quart of paint and 145 for the clear from ppg. The bags do look pretty sweet.
Not sure I get the base/color coat? You spraying candy or are you saying base coat as in sealer? Good luck with your project.
The HD "sunglo" (and perhaps the "pearl") colors are referred to as tri-coat: (1) a color base coat; (2) a tinted clear coat (with the solids); and, (3) clear coat.
