Default 3 hours and a can of Mothers

Here's what a person can do with 3 hours and a can of Mothers. I'd love chrome lower legs, but a little bit of elbow grease can do wonders.

It looks like it's going to take six hours to get a matching set though.

repeat every weekend.
Get chrome and ride. Nice job though!
Luckily...I bought a used bike that already had chrome.

You are going the long route by starting off with Mother's. It is not abrasive enough. You would have made better time if you had stripped the clear with aircraft stripper, then sanded a few fine grits and polished with rubbing compound, polishing compound, and then Mothers....or better yet, pull the leg, strip the clear and polish on a bench mounted buffer. I can knock out a pair of legs in less than an hour.

As far as repolishing everyweekend...B.S.....Polished aluminum might need a hand job once or twice a year on a garaged bike. I polished my Ironhead over 15 years ago. I might hit it with Mother's once a year. It still has plenty of shine. One thing for certain, polished aluminum won't peel like chrome, especially the cheapazz chrome HD sometimes sells.

Sorry, but those FUGLY Kawasaki lower legs are the first thing I would change on a new HD. Even if it was the last nickle I had, they'd have to go. You can't polish them enough, especially if you live anywhere close to an Ocean.

Those forks look terrific!! Nice work.
as for "might need a hand job once or twice a year",

I polished both of mine in under two hours three years ago. Using a palm sander 600,800,1200,&2000 grit sandpaper then used glitzs and a polishing wheel attached to a drill to bring it to a better than chrome shine. Best of all for the past three years they still look great with very little maintenance just some brasso twice a year followed by some wax.

Thank you. The first 15 years of her life, the original owner kept it locked up in his spare bedroom. It only had 11k miles on it when I bought it in 1992. It's got 53k on it now.
