Gravity still works but when it comes to something as thick as grease it will take the path of least resistance, so it will fill the neck before it starts to just run out the bottom and then has to be forced through the bearing creating pressure both top and bottom.

Remember the good ol' days when you had to pump a star hub full to grease the wheel bearings? Oh, whats a star hub? Another one of Harleys "poor designs", but eventually we got Timkin wheel bearings and they took the ZERK fitting off the hub, maybe one day they will remove the fitting from the rest of the line like the Dyna's.

BTW when a neck is apart it gets the BEARINGS, not the whole neck, packed with the blue HD wheel bearing it doesnt melt when it gets to be 80* out.
