For years the MOCO has claimed that the 5th gear whine was a result of the straight cut gear that was "supposedly" stronger than the Helical, "quiet" gears. They claimed to have the straight cut in 5th because it was a high torque, "kick down", passing gear. They also did the same thing with 1st. So we have two choices here. Either the MOCO always lied about the advantage of the straight cut gears, or....... they are now selling a weaker helical cut gear just to appease all the new yuppie "whiners" who will comkplain about the sound of 5th gear.
I think the latter is probably true. But that's just an opinion of course.
So my obviously biased opinion is that the 09's are every bit as good as the 2010's , if not better.
Oh wait.... I forgot about the CAT in ALL the 2010's. Slam dunk.. the 09 kicks ***!!

Very happy with the '09. The whine really isn't a big deal to me. Not that loud and in fact it reminds me when in those speed ranges which gear I'm in if going back n forth from either 4th n 5th gear or 5th n 6th gear.
I've not heard of any change worth bothering with other than available colors being different. Cat in exhaust? Mine is a Calif bike and I've not noticed any problems or heat with it in my bike. I've kept it stock and it's a non-issue to me.

I agree I work on semis and they use helical where they need quiet but use straight cut as much as they can so they can use a thiner lighter gear that is very strong
