Make friends with your Indy shop. Mine lets me borrow whatever i need. I usually slip him a $20 bill when I return it.

After getting ripped off for hundreds of dollars here by a member of these forums that had been around for some time, I'd have to caution anybody interested in loaning out their tools to do so only if you are getting full replacement value as a deposit, then refund the agreed upon balance once you get your tool back.

 

My dad has ran a construction company for as long as Ive been around (hes 76 now and still pounding nails) and thats his #1 rule........never ever borrow, loan or rent out your tools!!

 

I like the idea, with that being said I'm a pretty trusting person. But really would only lend out any of my tools to folks I know.

 

If you don't like the idea of spending (let's say for argument's sake) $200 on a tool you will only use once...

BUY ONE, use it once and sell it on ebay/craigslist or any other place for $150.

Hell, I'd buy a used tool in good shape at a price like that, then when I'm done, I'd do the same... SELL IT!

Okay, that last part is a lie... I NEVER get rid of tools! I just keep finding reasons to use them again!!!

 

I like the idea and don't see a down side if they put up a deposit. The tool loaner would need the ability to take credit cards. I would be calling when I changed my cams.

I have thought about doing something like this for windshields and seats. Folks want to test out different shields and seats before they commit to buying one and I thought renting two or three brands and sizes would make it worth the effort, might even be profitable.

I am wondering if the tool rental idea ever developed? I am looking for a Timesert kit to use for one hole. Happy to deposit the cost of a new kit, plus a rental fee, with the deposit returned upon return of the kit. I need the 12mm X 1.25 with 17.5mm sert. Hate to buy the kit for one hole! Thanks.

BTW: You can buy a drill bit and a cheap tap for much less than the cost of the kit. Some auto parts stores sell a cheap spark plug repair set that has one insert and the tap.
