Rod. Modification of a DOT helmet is illegal. So I definitely suggest that absolutly no-one do the following mod or you too would be a criminal and I for one would never want to contribute to the deliquency of a biker.
Due to recent HELMET **** activity in my state, someone I know really well finally broke down and bought a $50 HCI DOT helmet to replace his favorite skid lid. This person wears an XL but bought a Medium knowing that he would modify it. Keep in mind that all DOT helmets are basically the same. They have 1 to 1.5 inches of high density styrofoam designed to compress or "crush" on impact. Thus, the "Mushroom" look.
So this guy I know I places a pillow on the slab in the shop and places the helmet upside down on that pillow to absorb some shock and not scratch it up. He then takes a baseball bat and places the rounded (barrell end) into the helmet and wacks the handle end with a sledge. He does this evenly all the way around the entire interior of the helmet until all of the styrofoam is now compressed to 1/2 inch or less. Viola!! No more mushroom head.

I bought an Outlaw, which is cheap and gives that always sexy mushroom head look. This helmet is the classic Great Gazoo look from the Flintstones.
I'm going with the carbon fiber lid next. My helmet seems like it weighs 80lbs.

Advance Carbon Composites
right on -Stang951 -Head Trip Helmets is the way go. actually had the pleasure of going to the facility and trying on different helmets to find the right size. went back a couple months later and got my wife on too. the non-DOT helmets were the style we picked. Had an accident about a year ago -Advance Carbon Composites make a non-DOT helmet that took quite a blow and I am thankful I was wearing it!
