Default 2010 Ultra Classic: Clutch or Transmission Problem?

I have a new 2010 Ultra Classic; I previously owned a 2002, 2003 and a 2006 Ultra Classic, all with the Twin Cam 88 and 5-speed transmission, so I know I can’t readily compare this bike to ones I owned in the past.

My concerns, is that I hear gear or transmission whine in 1st and 6th gear. Not a big deal, but wondering if this should be considered ‘normal’. My bigger concern is that when the motor and transmission is really hot, I notice a lot of clunking when I engage and disengage the clutch. Not actually shifting the transmission, just engaging and disengaging the clutch. I also notice a whining noise, unless I hold the clutch in. Bike only has 200+ miles on it; do I have any concerns that should be addressed immediately?

Thanks, Richard

I think you do. I would take to dealer immediately and them examine and adjust. Something is wrong or just out of adjustment IMO.

Being new, I would take it in and have them fix it or address your concerns.

I have a 2010 Ultra and just went over 1500 miles. I've been hearing sounds coming from my motor/transmission too which reminds me of a sewing machine. I only hear it with with the radio turned down and with out throttle applied to the pipes. The 2010's have a catalyst and there is a noticable increase in the amount of heat near the O2 sensors. I think the noise is just a charactoristic of a new, tight engine which will get better in time.

The only gear I hear noise in is 1st. There is a bit of clunking here and there, but I think that's normal. I've ridden two '09's that act exactly as mine (except for the 5th gear indicator-whine in the '09's).

I have RGC has the same exact symptoms as yours. Have you found out what the problem is? I don't think it's normal.

bought 010 nov 7, put 1900 miles on it in mn... lots of unusual sounds. make sure warm up before drive. get all that cheap hd dino oil out of engine, tranny, primary.put some ams oil in primary/ engine. 80-90 ams gear lube in tranny. now bike sounds perfect. getting better with each mile.starts quickly in 30 ' weather. still some difficulty finding neutral but better since changed fluids. i agree with gent above, ride it. if something breaks, thats what warranties are for.having owned many bikes, thats my personal philosophy.

Dito on the 2010 UC; I said the same thing about mine sounding like a sewing machine, even with rineharts on. I have 1600 miles so far and have attributed the unusual sounds to being usual for this bike and have plans in the very near future to ditch the cat and go to a true dual system to let it breathe some. You have a warranty, so turn your radio up and ride it like you stole it...

Had a very similar clutch problem with my 08. When hot the clutch in my hand felt like I was about to pull out the cable from the transmission. Well last week it actually happened. Stranded me and the wife on a Sunday ride. Had to wait 2 hours for the tow truck. To me it sounds like either there isn't enough lube in the transmission, or the cable is not seated properly, which is what I always thought my problem was. Take it back before you get stuck like me. Now the take up and release on my clutch is smooooooooth.
