As previously stated, check your tire pressure and follow your owner's manual guidelines. My biggest question is not about the bike (I've seen lots of HD's hauling 2 really big people before) but about your buddy. You said that no one has ever been on the back of his 4 or 5 year old bike. Has he ever ridden with a passenger before? It is very different than riding solo, especially with a large passenger. I would not want to ride too close to someone on their first 2 up adventure. My advice is to keep him in front of you, if it is his first time, so you can keep an eye on him and not get rear ended by a heavy load.

Heavy Load?
Is 400 lbs. really considered a heavy load. My wife and I weigh about 360 lbs. together, plus leather and what ever else we bring along and we are not fat people, maybe a little over weight but not fat. I'm 6' 1" and she's 5' 10" and my bike handles us 2up without a problem. Room for more weight.

Shocks
50 psi in 09 or later and 25-40 in earlier mods. So says one of my techie buds. My wife and I ride an 09 Ultra. Im 200 and she is about 160 and packs all the boxes FULL when we travel. Its gotta be at least 400 lbs with all the stuff and Ive never had a problem. These ol Hogs will handle most anything you wanna put on em. Just keep air in the tires and have at it.
