Question about riding and high blood pressure
#21
I'll start by saying I was an ems worker for a while and have high BP. I take BP meds twice a day. I also have what is commoly refered to as "white coat syndrome". That's when your BP goes up when you enter the Doctors office, but goes down when you leave. If your concerned about the accuracy of your BP it's really a simple thing to learn to take your own BP reading. You can buy a BP cuff and stethescope for cheap at wallmart or any pharmacy. I always present with high BP at the cardiologist office and then at home later I'll check it myself and i'm always in my normal range on my meds. I wouldn't want the Doc to put me on BP meds until it was determined that I had chronic high BP. These pills are no fun and can have unwanted side effects. Can you say Viagra.

I am asking this as I used to have blood pressure in the normal range (128 over 72) and i have been noticing my BP has been slowly rising over the last few years after I took back up riding. I just happen to ride everyday to work and if I have a DR's appt. they always take my BP and the nurse gets a little alarmed as it is always elevated above normal. After setting a spell all is well!
I know riding raises your adrenalin level but I thought it was suppose to be relaxing at times, for most of us at least. The occasional errant cager will get your "dander" up so to speak.
I and my wife rode the Glide to a dentist appt when just by the way had a loose pea gravel parking area. I had to let wifey off so I could maneuver around to a parking area. When I signed in they...again...took my BP and said it was 205 over 140! WTF she took it again and was getting ready to call 911 as she honestly thought I was having a heart attack. I actually felt fine. I told her about wrestling a 900 lb Harley in her gravel driveway was the culprit!
Has anyone else had a problem with this?

As long as your doctor is giving you meds that keep it normal, you should be ok. I work in a high stress environment, and my stress level put me in the hospital one night. I was sure it was a heart attack, but just stress. Since I take xnax and zoloft at night, nothing stresses me out. they say it's addictive, but I'll take that over 911 anyday. I'm very chilled out these days
