I'm a mileage freak and have checked mileage for every fillup since buying the bike. Figures below assume windshield attached and no headwinds or tailwinds.

City: 47 mpg. nearly every time.
Highway, constant speeds: 50mph, ~60 mpg; 55-60mph, ~55mpg; 75-80mph, ~45
High-elevation, steep grades, slow speeds (e.g., CO): ~60mpg (also no power)

Best mileage: 63.5mpg (with windshield and 20-knot tailwind, averaging 50-55 mph)

Worst mileage (after installation of Thunderslide): 42mpg during a 575-mile, 75mph run down I-10 with a major headwind.

Average on last few trips in touring trim: ~54 mpg. We usually take backroads, moderate speeds. Rarely in a hurry, you know.

Just bought a '06 Road King and I got 59 mpg with wife on board. Mostly 55 mph but also was not trying to conserve the fuel. We were on two lane roads through a lot of small towns and quite a bit of traffic with some good cross winds. Was having problems with the gas I bought from a local conoco station(35 mpg) so I went to BP and paid for their 91 octane. Thats the ticket for me.

I have a 05 Ultra and I consistanly get 44 in town and 50-51 on the road. I'm always two up and keep my speeds between 57 and 67 when I'm on the road.
Harley says that top fuel mileage would be attained in top gear at 2400 rpm.

I agree that rpm is probably more important than mph in getting optimal mpg. That said, I don't ride with the idea of getting the best mpg. I like riding the twisties in second or third gear and taking it up to 80 mph on the superslabs. Sure, I don't get as high a mileage as I could (still between 40-43) but it's a lot more fun!
