Starting Engine on Jiffy Stand
#22
From the first day Harleys were ever parked in my garage they have all been started on the kickstand. Many reasons why? Friends want to hear them run, drinking, catching a buzz, mainly just because I crave that sound! My bikes when parked are always in neutral,100% of the time.

I believe the reason they teach you in the MSF course to be on it when you start it is if you have it in gear or something, you are on it so you can control it. I start mine on the stand all the time. I just make sure it is in nuetral and I always pull the clutch in for added saftety when firing.
I forgot about it being in gear once on my 05 Softail and hit the starter, the bike lurched and shook so violently that the end caps on the hand grips popped off. I was glad I was actually sitting on it that time.

I start it on the stand but it is still kind of foreign to me. I never started my inline-four sportbikes on the stand because I heard somewhere that it takes longer for oil to get to the right side of the engine when you start them on the stand. I don't know if that's true (and I do admit, it does sound like BS) but I took the precaution nonetheless.
I carried that over to the Duc twin even though it wasn't necessary but have finally broken that habit with the HD.

I'm the odd man out.....put on gloves/helmet etc. first..... sit on bike, already in gear, jiffy stand up, pull in clutch and start it up.....back it out of garage and down driveway while it is warming up....ride away slowly and don't push it for the first mile or so
I was always told it was a waste of time and gas to let it idle for a couple of minutes....start it, wait about 15-30 seconds for the oil to circulate around, then take off, just don't ride it like a madman/redline it until you have rode it a mile or two to get the engine up to operating temps *shrug*
