I can't stand the gas fume smell anymore
on my '09 RG. I've read here its either from the exhaust or from the "free flowing vent valve". I can smell it sitting at a red light whether the rear cylinder is firing or not and it really stinks up my garage when I get home from a ride. The bike is bone stock, and runs wells. I don't think its running rich, its definitley a gas fume like when you fill the gas tank. My '98 Sportster never did that. What gives? Has anyone been able to address this? I am wondering if there is a different style vent to install?

I agree, check the hoses, and any tank connections. If you let it sit for an extended period does it leak gas anywhere? Look carefully over the entire bike for any sign of gas as it evaporates rapidly. It should not be doing this. Has it had any service work done lately?

I don't know the answer to this, but I can say that my '10 does not have any issues with gas smells. So I don't think it's a characteristic of the newer bikes, there must be something wrong with yours. I'd say get it to the dealer before it goes up in flames.

Sure it's not a weird Oil smell? If so, it could be the vent tube on top of the transmission. That gear lube smells terrible and for a long time it's all I could smell on or near my bike (09 Ultra). The trans was overfilled.
Take the trans dip stick out and smell it. If it smells anything like what you've been smelling this could be the problem. Trans vent...
Oh, and the 09's do not have a gas tank crossover tube...
