Q-Hog...first off Awsome looking bike and paint job. Secondly "shocks topic" will give you a million opinions.

I ride with my best friend who has an 07 Ultra. He's a former retired bike LEO and rides like there is no tomorrow....he will go from NJ to Key West FL on a whim. Mention it on a monday and be packed and gone on a tuesday....This guy swore by and still does progressive 440's. Thats why I bought them. I cant argue they are great but expensive....good luck!

I have 42000 miles on my '05, and I'm still getting a good ride. I'm planning on doing the oil change this winter to them to freshen them up for next year.

How much oil do you put in them...do you just fill them to the top?

With 17k on my 08flht, I found the left shock was leaking. Having had good experience with Progressive Suspension, I went with their model 416. It is a direct replacement for 13" touring bikes. $400.00@ J&P.

How do you know your shocks are worn out? Is there a way to test them?

What you have to do is take the shocks off the bike, and then put them upside down and pump out the oil by compressing the shock. You let the oil drain into a measuring cup so you know how much came out, but on average it's about 11oz of new oil going back in. You can go with a thicker oil for a stiffer ride, or a thinner oil for a softer ride.

There is a great thread over on another forum that has pictures and everything to to along with this info, vtwin.

I have the lowered shocks on my 05. I changed the shock oil this past spring and put in 10wt oil. My bottoming out totally went away and the ride/handling improved significantly. I figured I had nothing to lose. Spend about $30 to try the oil swap and if it didn't work, I'd be buying new shocks anyway. I have put over 10k miles on the bike since the change and have had no problems.

When my rear shocks went out it felt like I was riding a hardtailed bike. Hardly any rear suspension at all. When I would hit a bump it would send me off the seat.
I can't afford those expensive shocks, so I went with the 13" Progressive 412 series shocks. What a difference those made in the ride! I'm sure the more expensive shocks are even better, but for now these made a world of difference.
