Default worn shift shaft?

05 EGC. Has anyone else had a problem with the shaft that connects the shifter to the linkage? I've replaced this thing twice now, and it needs to be done again! Bike has 45k on it. Bought new. Why does this shaft wear so quickly? Never had this problem on any previous bike. Does anyone make a better shaft? Maybe harder material so the splines don't wear out like this?

I have a 00EGC and just changed out the original one earlier this year. Not sure why you are going throught them so much. One thing I can think of possibly is are you pounding it into the gears???

If you are talking about the one the shift levers(heel+toe) are clamped down on I too had this problem. My solution was to get the billet shift levers. Cleaned the spline up with a wire wheel and torqued to spec and haven't had a problem since on my 07 SG. The old stock shift levers I could never get tight enough!

I just ran into a similar issue this weekend. The front toe shifter is starting to strip the spline both on the shaft and the shifter. I switched the heel and toe shifters around for now, but I will replace everything soon. I was thinking of going with the Pingle shaft that has a greese fitting on it. It won't help the splines, but, may make it less likely to have to hit as hard if things are working smoothly. I figure I may also go to the billet shifters that I have been thinking about for a while now. Who knows!

Install a zerk fitting into shaft housing and keep it greased, as shown here.

I had the same issue on my 08 FLHTC, but my heel shifter kept coming loose. The first time I lost it, I paid for it myself, thinking I didn't do correct maint on the fasteners. The next time I had HD pay for it and a new shaft. Since replaceing it and ensuring that everything was torqued correctly, I have had any issues.

I solved this problem on my 92 by getting a tack weld on the inside of the front one, no one ever noticed it. You have to make sure these stay tight by taking the bolts out and putting some locktite on them every once in awhile. If you just try to tighten them they will seem tight because the socket head bolts bind up. I'm thinking of using a hex head bolt but with a spacer to go in the recessed spot on the lever, then I can get some torque on the bolt to get them tight enough.

Just replaced the shaft on my 07 FLHP. Went with Pingels Stainless steel replacement. Which, by the way is already fitted with a grease zerk. Also went with their spacer that allowed me to lose the heel shift lever. My toe shifter was fubar so it went in the trash. Splines were chewed up. I will be getting rid of the HD shifter and going with an aftermarket extended toe shifter. I got the Pingel pieces from Dennis Kirk. I am sure they can be had elsewhere.

I just helped a friend put the Heim Joints on and we had to reposition the shift levers. When I tighntened them down with a T-handle I thought I had them tight enough but when I put an allen socket wrench on them was able to get another turn on them.
