Back from Blue Ridge Parkway

Did the BRP last May from Maggie Valley up to Skyline Drive, but continued north to MD off SLD. We rode SLD in 2001 and didn't like the 35mph limit or the toll, which was up from $5 to $15/vehicle this year. From Maggie Valley to Ashville the weather was atrocious--45°, rain, and visibility never more than a few feet--so we punted and took to the valleys the rest of the day. That 60 miles on the BRP was the worst weather I've ever ridden in--cold, wet, miserable, and you could hardly see the road. The next day was beautiful and we rode up the BRP, then turned west in MD, and then south down Hwy. 219 in WV. The enormous wind turbines on 219 are very impressive to say the least, and this road remains one of the best I've traveled in 34 states.

I did the BRP (twice) and Skyline Dr once this year. I loved it. I would highly recommend doing it during the week though. Had the road mostly to ourselves...although the deer thought they owned it. Was a bit scary at times with all the deer (and we saw a black bear cub) on the side of the road. If your sick and tired of traffic and stop signs and red lights and towns...BRP is the way to go. Sometimes you just need to get away from all the B.S and ride. Yes there are lots of great roads in Virginia, NC and SC, Tenn etc...but without stops?
