I can vouch for the popping caused by exhaust leak as I had that happen to me. Once the leak was repaired (pipe loose at manifold), the popping went away.

My rear head adjustment was on the left side of the bike... The setting prior to my adjustment was 3 turns out from closed.... I changed it to 3 1/4 - 3 1/2 turn out from closed and the popping went away. Do you know which screw to turn? There are a couple of them and one is a big NO NO to touch...
