The Wild One - Runnin' Like a Girl
I bought The Wild One with Marlon Brando and watched it with the wife last night.
But a scene in the movie had my wife laughing and left me very disappointed.... Here's the scene:
Kathie (the rather attractive leading lady and love interest of Johnny/Brando) runs off from Johnny after a tearful and emotional expression of angst. She just admitted her dream to Johnny, "That somebody would come here, stop at Uncle Frank's (the diner) for a cup of coffee and he would like me right away. He'd take me with him......."
Johnny says, "Where did you want this guy to take you? This guy had a cup of coffee?"
Well... there's some blithering and some more angst and crying then Kathie gets up and runs off "into the night".
I turn to the wife and say...classic "Damsel in Distress Run Scene"... because Kathie was doing the weak legged, run/stumble in heels, cry, wrist to the forehead, hair-toss, delicate arm flail "thing". You know.... the classic "Damsel in Distress Run".
Wife laughs and does a pretty good imitation.
Well this all leads to an angry mob of towns people, straight out a Frankenstein movie, chasing Johnny, pulling him off his Triumph and "arresting" him. He makes a hasty escape and the foot chase ensues.
Much to my shock and disappointment this first scene of Johnny running features BRANDO doing his best "Damsel in Distress" run!!!!!!!!!!
Before I could say anything, my wife says, "Oh my GAWD!! He CANNOT run." Somewhere in her jeers she used the word Sissy.
The words, "He runs like a F&*^ing girl !!", just fell out of my mouth.
The wife does another "Damsel in Distress" imitation.
Kathie doing the Damsel in Distress run is funny and, given the movie was filmed in 1953, very period appropriate. Brando doing a nearly equally Damsel in Distress run is NOT funny.
I feel like I should do something. I want the image to go away. Brando is on film running like a GIRL. It's just not right. The world is somehow different than I thought it was supposed to be.

Old movies are fun to watch and they give us great insight as well as a viewpoint from the past. It's hilarious watching that scene - I noticed the same thing - and I marveled how far we've come but also at how far we've backslid.
Great movie - glad you liked it. Brando probably looked back and felt the same way about it as you do now.
