hmm if it takes 10 min to register does that mean that 10min after you cook your motor it will tell you?

I (for one) really appreciate this thread because I was considering getting one of these units. Excuse me for saying so, but it sounds almost as useless as the stupid air temp guage. Now I think I'll save my money. - Thanks for the heads up!
What he said Thanks
I'm looking at the directional compass instead

If you can't tell your oil is getting hot well before "cooking" your motor, you don't belong on a motorcycle. The guage is a reference. You see where it normally operates by looking at it under normal operating conditions. If you start seeing much higher temps than normal and aren't smart enough to shut it down, you deserve what you get.

I'm a firm believer in darwanism.

I never really understood buying a temperature gauge. Is it that common of a problem that your bike is getting too hot an you need to shut it down? Other than spending money on something just to look at it, what is the point? I am seriously asking, please reply!

I've had a lot of experience with race motors and thats why the gauge threw me. I wouldn't even consider getting on the throttle in my Barracuda until I had heat in the oil. I see a lot of guys start up their bikes cold and throttle the motor to death and I just cringe. I'm no expert on the oiling system on a twin 88 but I was told it only takes 8 ounces of oil to lubricate the motor? Sense it's being pumped out of the pan basically cold don't the bearings take a pounding for the first 10 to 20 miles? I alway's let my bike warm up a bit before I take off and I never throttle it until I have some miles on from a cold start. How do these motors live without heat in the oil?

I got mine at wally's since the HD is a pain to install. If I remember the HD unit installs in the return line....so the temp would be the same as the oil tank unit. It's going to be slow warming due to the start temp of the oil. it takes a little while for the engine to warm up and circulate all the oil.

The Wally one was complete and very easy to install, besides I saved a bunch vs the HD price. Remember HD = Hundred Dollars.

If you do the tank install, let the engine be cold, do not pull the oil cap. You will only loose 2 - 4 tablespoons of oil.

your right on the oil deal, I thought why did I just change my oil and now I'm gonna lose it all. So I got everything ready for a quick change over. I only lost a half a quart doing the change over.
