Is that it? just switch the rotors? Has the noise returned?

Why would switching the rotors solve it? I believe people that say it does, but I'm curious as to why it works?

Jesterphatt,
I have an 06 SG. For the first 1200kms I had a horrible squeal from the front brakes when comming to a stop. I took my bike in to the dealer for the first service and noted my concern. When I picked up my bike they said they fixed the brake squeal, well they did and I had a shorter pull on the lever. It was quiet. Now with 2500 kms on it, the squeal has come back, not quite as bad, but still there. The dealer said they had replaced the pads, not sure if they did or not. Please let me know how you make out.

The wife? [8D] He probably did...I did...but that's another thread.

PS My wife gets a little steamed when I refer to her as 'it'. I guess it's just not PC anymore.

Did the rotor swap thing, no help, installed Lyndall racing pads and all is well. I have added a couple of thousand miles since the change a still no problem. You can find them here. http://www.lyndallracingbrakes.com/home.htm

Disc brake squeal is caused by the brake pads vibrating at a high frequency that emits an audible noise. Anything you do to change the frequency of that vibration will at least temporarily eliminate the noise. Anti-squeal compound, sanding the rotors, switching sides with the rotors, even blowing the dust around will effect the vibration. Disc brake squeal is as old as disc brakes. Some brakes and brake hardware designs work better that poorly designed brakes. Mine sounds like a freight train stopping most of the time. Personally, I think if new rotors will fix the problem then H-D should recall them all and replace them free.

Check your pads. I had the brake squeal (more like a howl when coming to a stop) and had it addressed at my 1000 miler. The pads were glazed over. The tech deglazed them and now 700 mi later, all is still well.

Floating rotors are the only way to go, $88 EACH, no squeal with stock pads!

1200 miles on the rotor swap and no squeel whatsoever. None.
